Morning Noticings Inspired by Rain and Clouds

When I think of all the living beings around me today who are so grateful for the rain falling after this long stretch of dry weather, there is a sense of contentment and ease that settles into my bones.

I wonder if to the clouds it is like knowing you need to cry, the conditions are there for it but somehow just before liquid falls— the conditions pass and you move on to the next thing, still running hot. I wonder about the soil around us, benefiting from watering done by helpers like humans but its benefits being only partial and a bit artificial as this water doesn’t quite contain the same benefits of rain. What does that quenching of thirst after a long period of no rain feel like to all that await its nourishment?

The ripple effect of the clouds allowing the rain to fall in whatever way suits the moment is immense. The ability and willingness of clouds to reflect the current moment fills me with awe at how effortlessly they model the way to accept and reflect all around them.

Today we are feeling grateful for the rain, the life lessons of the clouds, and the opportunity to accept the invitation to slow down and choose different rhythms on this summer day.

Reconnecting with Offerings of To a life well occupied

This month and really over the summer, our conversations have been about noticing the balance and rhythm between rest and play. We’ve taken more of these conversations off the blog and into live zoom chats and in person experiences.

These connections and reconnections always have so much to teach us and to reflect on. We’re in the midst of applying what we have learned to the way To a life well occupied shows up in the world to reconnect and refuel.

This may mean that you find fewer blog posts and more ways to connect and refuel in other forms. Much like the clouds, this project is committed to following what is needed for all parties and accepting that this may look different in various seasons.

A Closing Reflection for You

As I sip my coffee on the couch and listen to the gentle rain tap on the window, I am grateful for a weekend that sets the tone by encouraging our whole family to settle in and wonder what is possible now that the sunny day activities have been ruled out. We are welcoming its gifts and recognizing it as in invitation to choose what nourishes.

No matter the weather outside or within you—

What are you noticing a nudge to do (and not do) to reconnect and refuel this weekend? What happens when you choose to nurture reconnection?

What activities call our attention but feel like missing out when you know winter days could be months away?

Do we have rainy day lists of the possibilities for play, rest, work, and everything in between?

How does the weather and season invite us to speed up or slow down?
